Secondary Lymphedema (Acquired)
This occurs when a normal functioning lymphatic system is damaged by external factors. Key causes include cancer treatments (surgery/radiation), tumors, infections (like cellulitis or parasites), physical trauma, obesity, and circulatory issues like chronic venous insufficiency.
Primary Lymphedema (Genetic)
This is caused by inherited gene mutations that prevent the lymphatic system from developing properly (such as missing vessels or faulty valves). Symptoms can appear at birth, during puberty, or later in life
